Charles Messier was an astronomer who lived in the 1700's. While his interest lay in the discovery of comets, his fame resulted from a catalogue of objects that he recorded so he would not mistake "permanent" objects (nebula, galaxies, etc.) for his comets. The observation of all 110 objects remains a key milestone for amateur astronomers.
